Mr Herman, I have never seen a good teacher like you before. You made every language class enjoyable for me even though the units were very boring. I'll also miss our talks about New York Knicks. I thought it was really strange when I found out that we support the same team but it made my year more enjoyable. I'm really sad because next year, I won't have a teacher like you. Thanks for a great year, Mr. Herman!

Mr. Herman I know that I didn't participate well in class sometimes. Actually, mostly. Now I feel sorry for this. But I want you to know that you were the one of the best teachers I ever had.

Dear Mr. Herman,
I have had a great Prep year and I think your role is very big in that year. We care for you very much and I think you care for us as much as we do for you. None of my teachers had ever cried for me before. And I had never cried for one of my teachers. But you did cry for us and made me cry too. Even though I cried I want to tell you that I am not sad. I am happy that we succeeded. Because if we hadn't succeeded, it would have meant that there is a problem. But we did succeed. And we know that you are a very (very very very...) good teacher. Besides being happy though I feel wistful and I know I will feel this way for a very long time. I will miss the different ways to say "hello" and "goodbye", the flashcards that are hanging from the ceiling, the seating puzzles, the G.A.M.E., Jolly Ranchers, The news, Tunesday, the reading activities, our class library, Hall of Fame, our calender, the camel that I (accidentally) killed, the man who was killed by a giant doughnut, Herman Special Cookies, Mr. Sherman, Herbert Wimple, Herbetta, Ripping Midget Clown, Oliver (the lizard), reading journals, You, You, You, You, You...

Mr. Herman, you are one of the best teachers I have ever had. I had fun and I learned in your class at the same time. I am really glad that I was in your class this year. I don't really like talking in the class but you made me want to participate. Thank you for everything you have done this year.

Dear Mr. Herman,
This is going to be my thank you for all that you have done for us throughout the year. First of all you should know that I and the whole class love you very much. We know that you work very hard to give us a good education and we really appreciate it. Personally I can’t even explain how shocked I am about how much you care for your students. I have never seen a teacher doing as much as you do for a class. You give us all of
your candies, you prepare slides every day and you make us special games and
activities. Speaking for myself I was pretty worried about being in a new
school and being more grown-up. I was worried that the teachers weren’t going
to be as friendly or caring as they used to be. But you were so genuine and
helpful the year was so much easier for me. You always helped us with every
problem we had even if it was something completely irrelevant to school work.
You made all the lessons more enjoyable even if they were boring like
grammar J . So thank you so much for an awesome year and I will really miss
you, your class and Prep F very much! You ROCK!
See you next
year!

Best teacher Mr.Herman,
I don’t know how I am going to fit my feelings into this writing. I can’t fit because I never had this much feelings about a teacher as much as I have for you. I never had a teacher like you before so knowing that you won’t be our teacher next year, makes me cry all the time I think of it. At the first day of the school you were the teacher in our class when we were taking the proficiency exam and I hoped for you to be our teacher. When I saw that you were my teacher and we had 10 lessons with you per week I was jumping with happiness. At the beginning of the year my English level was so low, almost I wasn’t able to speak. You taught me English. Thanks to you I improved my English. I could never do that without your help. You made me love English. You did a lot for us this year. I really mean it, a lot! You shared your candies with us even they were from Jenna’s mom. You made comment videos almost every week to learn what we like about your class and what to be improved. You kept making interesting and funny PowerPoints each day. You made the class as entertaining as you can for us.You kept making big calendars for us. You read books that we recommended to you and you read books and recommended to us. We had 2 parties this year 1000-Word-Party and The Hall Of Fame Ceremony. You baked cookies for us. You brought Irn-Bru to class and gave it to us without even taking a sip. You made all of those exercises for us to learn better. You asked us the things we are having a hard time with and you concentrated on those things. You made everything a teacher can do to teach their choochoos. Your passion of teaching never disappeared. I didn’t cry for a year in school but when you said that the lesson we had was the last lesson with you, I couldn’t hold my tears. When I saw the tear coming out of your eye that made me understood that we, our class, and you have a deep connection. I really appreciate everything you did for us, literally everything. I've never seen a teacher like you before. None of the teachers can be that much caring and sincere to their students. I will always keep in touch with you.
I love you!
Best wishes,
Alara Büyükkoroğlu (non-former choochoo)

Dearest Mr. Herman,
I haven't cried for the big separation of the class because I know there are always good, even better things ahead of you. For instance, I had an amazing year at seventh grade yet I hadn't wanted to leave my class on sixth grade and same thing happened each and every year since then and look at me now. I am again looking back on all of the crazy memories with a stubborn smile that denies to leave my cheeks. I don't think this is the end Mr. Herman, honestly. This is the actual beginning of the phase of loving and loosing in our lives and I am rather quite excited than sorry to be starting it. I have enjoyed our class so much together that I am hopeful for us, as a whole we are surely to succeed and have our own happily ever after. I know that there will be promises not kept and words forgotten but I am sure that there will be lasting memories of you and of us. And you, Mr. Herman, honestly are the first reason I had a good beginning in high school. I am sure you know the feeling that you get when you love someone or just care about their thoughts, you want them to witness your accomplishments, share your happiness and approve you. Well I had these feelings as you were the first to welcome and embrace without the threat of losing your interest on us. I wanted you to know and witness and even be proud and I never wanted you to look back on someday and remember being sad because of us. It lightens my heart that you feel the same way.
We all loved you Mr Herman, and we are all glad that we shared this year in our own perferct way, detached from cliches and stereotypes.
See ya in a better future.
With great admiration and best of wishes,

In 2003 schools started
to be investigated by the CHOOCHOOS (Children’s Highly Official Organic Charity
Organization Of Search) in order to find the perfect teacher. Since the
beginning of the investigation 3209 schools has been investigated. Finally in
2013 the best teacher was found. According to the information that is received
from the CHOOCHOOS that teacher’s name is Matthew Herman. He is a Language
teacher in Uskudar American Academy and lives in İstanbul, Turkey. After he had
been chosen “the best teacher in the world” Matthew Herman got lots of offers
from other schools but he explained that he won’t accept the offers. He said: ”I
really appreciate the offers that you made but I have a really good job in UAA
and lots of great students. I am not going to leave them.

Dear Mr. Herman,
First of all, I would like to thank you. For everything that you did for us. We all saw that you really worked very hard to teach us things in the best way and I'm amazed by your efforts. All of your creative ideas, your exams, your classes, everything were perfect and enjoyable. I'm sure I'll never find any other teacher like you. I think you are very unique, Mr. Herman, you are helpful and sharing. You shared your "Irn Bru"s with us even though you didn't drink. You gave all of your candy to us even though they were gifts from abroad. Individually, I saw that you cared about us a lot and you made us achieve a really high point in the language-learning-mountain. Thank you for hanging both classes on the wall of Hall of Fame, thank you for everything, Mr. Herman. I hope you will be my teacher again.:)

Mr.Herman you are the most genuine person I've ever seen. Since the beginning of the year you are both a friend and a teacher to us. I think because of your efforts my English came into this level and I appreciate all of your efforts. I really want you to be my teacher next year to but it doesn't seem possible but I will come and visit you I promise:) I won't ever forget you ;) You are one of the best teachers in the world:))
